Mary Hale was invited by Laura Sanchez, flamenco dancer, educator and choreographer, to create a set design to represent a fictional and symbolic “Holland”, first indicated in Emily Kingsley’s “Welcome to Holland” poem about parenting a child with a disability. Drawing inspiration from this poem, Laura’s performance captures “the essence of being a mother — a caregiver — waking up to a world transformed by trauma. Laura challenges societal narratives about motherhood, preconceived notions of disability, deconstructs internalized ableism, and celebrates the inherent strength of caregivers, creating a space for dialogue and reflection.” Read more here.
Hale designed and created larger than life Tulips, props, and an immersive waiting area for audience members attending Sanchez’s one-woman performance. The multi-disciplinary performance blends flamenco with theatrical dance, poetry, humor, spoken word, film, and physical installation to illuminate the often overlooked role of caregivers.
