Since 2020, Mary has been deeply invested in research into biodegradable bioplastics for use in her her experimental practice. These material studies were completed by students in Hale’s advanced architectural Circular Installation studio during the fall of 2021. The studio was published in the 2022 Lisbon Architecture Triennial’s “Emerging Voices on New Architectural Ecologies”.

Algae Inflatable Prototype, 2020

A homemade, biodegradable inflatable welded from home cooked sheets of algae and hemp-based films. A proof of concept for a larger inflatable to replace persistent materials used in Mary Hale’s inflatable installations. Materials experimentation completed in collaboration with Isabella Greco.
